Tomato dal - Andhra cuisine


Ingredients:

Masoor dal 1 cup
tomatoes 2 big finely chopped
onion 1 medium chopped
green chillies 3 slit lengthwise
cumin seeds 1/2 tsp.
ginger a small piece
turmeric powder 1/4tsp.
mustard seeds 1/2tsp.
whole red chillies 2 or 3
garlic 5 cloves
curry leaves
oil 3tsp.
hing 1/2tsp

Method:

1. Pressure cook dal and mash it. Keep aside in a bowl.

2. Heat oil in a bottomed pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and allow to pop. Then add garlic cloves, red chillies, ginger, green chillies and saute for few seconds.

3. Add chopped onions and saute till the onions are transparent. Now add chopped tomatoes and stir for 5 mins.

4. To this add turmeric powder and salt and mix well.

5. After a few seconds, add the mashed dal to this mixture and add a cup of water. Stir the dal well so that it mixes well with the tomato mixture. Add hing.

6. Cook for 5-10mins and turn off the flame.

7. Serve with rice or chappathis.
